About the Alcatel Wavestar OLS
The Alcatel-Lucent Wavestar OLS is a modular ultra-dense WDM optical line system widely deployed in long-haul and regional networks worldwide.
- The Wavestar OLS delivers up to 400 Gbps over a single fibre, supporting 80 wavelengths across SONET/SDH-formatted channels
- It supports flexible network configurations including add-drop multiplex and linear DWDM topologies with built-in self-healing protection
- Provides simultaneous transport of mixed-rate traffic including OC-192/STM-64, OC-48/STM-16, and low-bit-rate services on a single platform
DTC is an independent supplier of telecoms equipment and has no affiliation with Alcatel-Lucent

Refurbished Alcatel-Lucent WAVESTAR OLS hardware supply
The Alcatel-Lucent Wavestar OLS is a modular ultra-dense WDM optical line system developed by Lucent Technologies to maximise fibre capacity across long-haul and regional networks. Available in multiple capacity tiers – including the OLS 2.5G, 10G, 40G, 80G, and the flagship 400G – the platform supports up to 80 wavelengths on a single fibre, delivering aggregate capacities of up to 400 Gbps. The Wavestar OLS remains widely deployed in carrier backbone networks where high-capacity DWDM transport, mixed-rate wavelength provisioning, and long-reach optical amplification are essential.
80-channel ultra-dense WDM capacity
The Wavestar OLS 400G was the industry’s first 80-wavelength ultra-dense wave division multiplexing system, capable of delivering up to 400 Gbps over a single strand of fibre. The platform supports simultaneous switching between and blending of OC-192/STM-64, OC-48/STM-16, and low-bit-rate SONET or SDH-formatted channels on the same fibre. This mixed-rate capability allows operators to provision diverse service types across a shared optical infrastructure without requiring dedicated wavelengths for each traffic class.
Modular optical amplification and line management
The OLS architecture is built around erbium-doped fibre optical amplifiers (EDFAs) with four different amplifier types deployable in single or dual configurations. This flexibility supports varying span distances across ring and linear topologies, with the OLS 80G supporting span engineering from one to eight spans and a maximum optical line length of 640 km in long-reach configurations. Integrated optical monitoring provides per-wavelength channel visibility at amplifier outputs, supporting comprehensive fault management and performance assurance across the optical line.
Wavelength add-drop and network flexibility
The Wavestar OLS supports optical add-drop multiplexing (OADM) at any node on a ring, enabling wavelengths to be added or dropped without regenerating through traffic. This architecture reduces the need for back-to-back transponders at intermediate sites and supports point-to-point, ring, and add-drop network configurations. The platform is managed via the SubNetwork Management System (SNMS), providing centralised fault, provisioning, configuration, and security management through a graphical interface.
Alcatel-Lucent WAVESTAR OLS repair services
DTC provides specialist repair and lifecycle support for Alcatel-Lucent Wavestar OLS platforms, focused on restoring complex optical hardware to a fully serviceable state rather than offering best-effort fixes. Repairs are driven by detailed platform knowledge and structured fault isolation, covering optical amplifier modules, optical transport units, and system controller cards across the OLS 2.5G, 10G, 40G, 80G, and 400G variants.
Each repair is completed with defined test and verification processes aligned to Wavestar OLS operating requirements, ensuring repaired units can be reintroduced into live DWDM networks with confidence. This emphasis on validation, repeatability, and long-term sustainment allows operators to extend the operational life of deployed Wavestar OLS systems while controlling cost and risk.
DTC also provides hands-on technical support and break/fix services for the Alcatel-Lucent Wavestar OLS, helping resolve faults quickly and keep your network operational without reliance on OEM maintenance contracts.

Warranty and risk mitigation – why source outside the OEM?
Warranty, quality, and risk mitigation
DTC supplies fully warrantied platforms and parts across all network layers, supported by defined SLAs and quality-controlled repair services. All recovered equipment is inspected, tested, and audited at platform, part number, serial number, and software revision level. These processes are governed by ISO 9001-certified quality management systems, ensuring consistent performance, traceability, and reduced operational risk.
End-to-end audit trails are maintained from collection through resale, repair, or recycling, with transparent inventory visibility and regular reporting. This ensures customers retain full control, compliance, and confidence in the condition and provenance of every asset.
Why source outside the OEM?
Sourcing through DTC provides a cost-efficient alternative to OEM supply chains while maintaining enterprise-grade reliability. Independent sourcing enables faster access to spares through in-house, multi-vendor inventory and continued support for legacy and end-of-life platforms no longer available from manufacturers.
Vendor-agnostic sourcing also simplifies procurement across mixed-vendor networks, while reuse and refurbishment support sustainability goals by extending asset life and reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing new equipment.
